  • Reduction of parking spots at 226 Argyle

Unfortunately, our neighbour at 226 Argyle has chosen to reduce the number of spots that we can use on their lot. Effective immediately, the first four parking spots closest to Argyle are now off limits to us AT ALL TIMES and will be actively enforced. The spots should be clearly marked by red signs. We are seeking new parking arrangements for our members and we will update you if and when the situation changes.

  • Limited Parking during Roof Replacement - Nov 10-24

We have confirmation that the roofing company, RoofMaster, will commence roof replacement work starting Thursday, November 10, and may take close to 2 weeks to complete.

Thursday & Friday (November 10 & 11): RoofMaster will take up 25’ of parking space at the side of the building to accommodate two trailer bins.

Monday, November 14 until completion: Parking spaces will be severely limited to accommodate the roofing company’s vehicles and the large roll off bins that will be needed for the old roof. Two roll off bins will be parked parallel to the building. Because the driver needs room to drop his box and advance his truck as he's unloading it, many parking spaces will be unavailable.

Roof work will start at 8:00 am each morning and will continue until 5:30 pm each day. Their trucks will leave the parking lot at @5:30 pm each evening, but the roll off bins will remain overnight.

We do recognize that this will be a major inconvenience for our curlers. Unfortunately, the consequences of holding off are likely to be worse than the inconvenience of getting it done now.

We are fortunate to have deep expertise on the Board for facilities between Gord Sutherland, Paul Engelbrecht, and Tom Sinclair. Feel free to chat with any of them to get a more expert opinion on the situation.

The OCC appreciates your understanding and patience, and ask those who drive to the club to be prepared to seek alternate parking during the next two weeks. https://www.ottawacurlingclub.com/about/parking (Dates subject to change depending on contractor’s availability.)

    Thank you.

Board of Directors of the Ottawa Curling Club

  • The new roof is coming, but so is some parking disruption

As we announced at the AGM, the ice shed absolutely needs a new roof and it's getting it this month. Unfortunately, the roofers will be taking up most of the club's side parking lot, especially at the start of the project and during the day throughout the project. When we know the exact dates, we will announce them as widely as possible along with details of when and how much of the parking lot will be usable. The work is expected to take 2 weeks or less with good weather. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience, but we ask for everyone to bear with us while we do this important renewal project.

  • Defending the Quebec Challenge Cup vs Windsor (Nov 5th)

For the first time since 1957, the Quebec Challenge Cup trophy resides at the Ottawa Curling Club!

Join us on Saturday, November 5th from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM, to cheer on our OCC teams lead by James Benson and Geoff Colley as we defend the Cup vs Challenger: Windsor (Quebec).

The Quebec Challenge involves having a 10-end double rink curling game. At the conclusion of each challenge, the Cup is awarded to the club with the highest aggregate score.

The Quebec Challenge Cup is the oldest competitive trophy in North America, and has been continually contested since 1874.

  • Practice Ice

The Practice ice is now available online.
Owing to the demand for practice ice, bookings are for 30 minutes (a half-hour) only.

  • Match Committee interim ruling on brooms

The Match Committee considered the question of brooms at their meeting last Wednesday (Sept 28). Their interim ruling can be found on the rules page. The short version is that most members can keep using their current equipment, but we ask you to do so in the spirit of fair play.

  • OTTAWA CURLING CLUB WINS QUEBEC CHALLENGE CUP! (Oldest competitive trophy in North America!)

Our OCC double rink skipped by Spencer Cooper and Eddie Chow challenged the Quebec Challenge Cup holders, Cornwall Curling Centre, and emerged victorious!

The Quebec Challenge Cup is the oldest competitive trophy in North America. It has been continually contested since 1874. The series is open to any club involved with the OVCA or Curling Quebec as an event under the Canadian Branch. Due to the vast number of clubs waiting to challenge for the Cup, it is typically a 5-7 year cycle to get another chance to challenge for this large, prestigious trophy.

The Quebec Challenge Cup involves having a 10-end double rink curling game. At the conclusion of each challenge, the Cup is awarded to the club with the highest aggregate score.Inline image

Congrats to EMMA MISKEW for winning the Curler of the Year Award at the Ottawa Sports Awards!

Emma is recognized as one of the top curlers in the world at her position. She plays third on the Rachel Homan team, the #1 ranked team in the world. This team has dominated women’s curling in 2015, winning 6 major events. Their win at the Canada Cup clinched a berth in the Olympic Trials to be held in Ottawa in 2017, the first women’s team to do so. Emma sets up the ends for Rachel and is key in deciding team strategy on how an end should be played. She is an original member of this powerful team

Congrats to TEAM HOMAN (RACHEL HOMAN, EMMA MISKEW, JOANNE COURTNEY, LISA WEAGLE) for winning Female Team of the year at the Ottawa Sports Awards for the fifth time in the past six years.

Their tournament winning percentage against the planet’s best women’s teams on the World Curling Tour was even better during the 2015 portion of their 2015-2016 season.

Earlier in 2015, Team Homan won a bronze medal at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts women’s curling nationals.

The lineup of lead Lisa Weagle, second Joanne Courtney, third Emma Miskew and skip Rachel Homan tore up the circuit to start their current season, finishing as runners-up in Newfoundland to go alongside victories in Oakville, Stockholm, Calgary, Truro, N.S., Oshawa, Grand Prairie, Alta. and Yorkton, Sask.

They won 3 of 4 Grand Slam titles to become the world’s #1-ranked team by an enormous merit points margin.

Team Homan also won the Canada Cup of Curling against a national field to earn a guaranteed place in the Canadian Olympic Team Trials event to be held in Ottawa in December 2017.

Congrats to TEAM HANNA (JENN HANNA, BRIT O’NEILL, KAREN SAGLE, STEPHANIE HANNA) as they emerged victorious in the all-Ottawa Curling Club battle vs TEAM HOMAN (RACHEL HOMAN, EMMA MISKEW, JOANNE COURTNEY, LISA WEAGLE) in the finals of the Ontario Scotties!

  • Winterlude Curling Program at Outdoor Lansdowne Park Curling Court Jan 29 to 31, 2016

The City of Ottawa with OSEG and the Ottawa Valley Curling Association (OVCA) are hosting outdoor curling at Lansdowne Park during Winterlude. The curling clubs have stepped up to provide volunteers for this event on each of the three weekends of Winterlude.

The Ottawa Curling Club is hosting on the first weekend (Jan 29 to 31) and the Rideau and RCN (Navy) Curling Clubs will host on the second and third weekends respectively. The curling sessions will be 4 hours on each of the days, from 4 to 8pm on Fridays and from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

This is a great opportunity for the OCC to show our true colours and promote the game to all who come to Winterlude. We will need volunteers to help with the basic curling instruction and program management and supervision during these times. All OCC members including our Getting Started curlers will have all the skills needed to help out on this great opportunity. The details are still being finalized so stay tuned for more information. We will have a sign up sheet in the lounge in early January.

Let's all have fun at Winterlude!
