  • Saturday Morning League to become an open league in 2017-18

The Saturday Morning league will become an open league next season, accepting teams of any mix of genders. The change was proposed, and decisively supported, by the league members in an OCC Board-administrated written survey conducted in the fall. The league members saw an opportunity to bolster league membership while simultaneously providing another option for women to curl at the OCC. The survey results were posted on the bulletin board at the OCC. In response, the OCC Board of Directors passed a motion changing the status to an open league effective September 2017.

As always, returning teams will have priority for league registration but there are open spots available, so start recruiting your team now!

  • Parking spots on 226 Argyle property no longer available to members

At the end of November, we reported that our neighbour at 226 Argyle had chosen to reduce the number of spots that we can use on their lot. Now, the owner wants to reduce our access even further.

We started this relationship a few years ago with access to 10-12 spots for our evening curlers. In return, we have provided snow and garbage removal for the property, which is not an insignificant cost. The latest change would reduce our access to 4-5 spots and only for the late evening draw. The math no longer makes sense and the owner has shown no signs of being more accommodating, so we are ending the relationship.

Effective immediately, we ask that members stop parking at 226 Argyle. We also want to warn you that the owner may install a chain between the properties that would prevent access from our property onto Argyle. (A chain used to be installed every winter prior to our current negotiated arrangement.)

We do recognize that there will be some inconvenience as people get used to not being able to drive through. We appreciate your understanding, and ask members to be considerate about letting cars out of our parking lot.

Despite this limitation, the OCC has run multiple draws every evening for decades. The available parking options outside the club’s lot are what makes this possible. Please be prepared to seek alternative neighbourhood parking when our lot is full:

    1.      Commercial Parking Lot on the south side of the club lowers its rate after business hours to $3 (TBC). The meter accepts large change and credit cards and the lot is monitored.

    2.      Ottawa Police Association parking lot, on Catherine Street, is available, but has restrictions: Mon – Wed after 10pm; Thu – Fri after 5pm; Sat – Sun all day. The gates will be up when the lot is open (and free) to OCC members.

    3.      Street Parking is available on most surrounding streets, the closest of which are O’Connor, north of Argyle – free after 5:30pm and weekends, as well as Argyle itself - with metered times.

  • Power was re-instated

Everything is back to normal at the club!

  • Wed Jan 4th: Club closed for the day, Cash League cancelled due to power outage

Due to an ongoing power outage the club is closed for the day and the Cash League is cancelled for tonight. Ottawa Hydro is projecting a 4pm restoral for power, which is not enough time to get the ice back in shape for the 5pm draw tonight. We expect to return to normal operations tomorrow.

  • Wednesday, Jan 4 - No power at club - all practice is cancelled for this afternoon! STAY TUNED

ALL PRACTICE ICE IS CANCELLED this afternoon.

There is a power failure in the neighbourhood surrounding the curling club, and current reports are that the issue is expected to be resolved by the afternoon.

  • Toy Mountain Christmas Drive at OCC - collection extended to Monday, Dec 19th

Interested in helping a local family in need this Christmas, but unsure how to contribute? The OCC is making it easy for our generous curlers to support those less fortunate.

The Ottawa Region's Toy Mountain campaign helps bring Christmas cheer to thousands of local children in need. Unfortunately, the Ottawa area is seeing increasing demand by families in need at Christmas and have seen shortages in toy donations in recent years.

This year, Toy Mountain aims to help 20,000 children in the Ottawa area. The greatest requirement is for toys for boys and girls ages 0-2 and 11-12.

Drop off your new, unwrapped Christmas gifts under the club Christmas tree.

Any inquiries can be directed to Robyn at robyn.mattie@curling.ca.

With close to 1000 regular curlers at our club, a little can go a long way.

Toys will be collected under the tree until Monday, December 19th, 2016.

(Cash donations will also be accepted through Dalal, and Robyn will do some extra shopping!)

  • Limited Parking during Roof Replacement - Nov 10-24

We have confirmation that the roofing company, RoofMaster, will commence roof replacement work starting Thursday, November 10, and may take close to 2 weeks to complete.

Thursday & Friday (November 10 & 11): RoofMaster will take up 25’ of parking space at the side of the building to accommodate two trailer bins.

Monday, November 14 until completion: Parking spaces will be severely limited to accommodate the roofing company’s vehicles and the large roll off bins that will be needed for the old roof. Two roll off bins will be parked parallel to the building. Because the driver needs room to drop his box and advance his truck as he's unloading it, many parking spaces will be unavailable.

Roof work will start at 8:00 am each morning and will continue until 5:30 pm each day. Their trucks will leave the parking lot at @5:30 pm each evening, but the roll off bins will remain overnight.

We do recognize that this will be a major inconvenience for our curlers. Unfortunately, the consequences of holding off are likely to be worse than the inconvenience of getting it done now.

We are fortunate to have deep expertise on the Board for facilities between Gord Sutherland, Paul Engelbrecht, and Tom Sinclair. Feel free to chat with any of them to get a more expert opinion on the situation.

The OCC appreciates your understanding and patience, and ask those who drive to the club to be prepared to seek alternate parking during the next two weeks. https://www.ottawacurlingclub.com/about/parking (Dates subject to change depending on contractor’s availability.)

    Thank you.

Board of Directors of the Ottawa Curling Club

  • The new roof is coming, but so is some parking disruption

As we announced at the AGM, the ice shed absolutely needs a new roof and it's getting it this month. Unfortunately, the roofers will be taking up most of the club's side parking lot, especially at the start of the project and during the day throughout the project. When we know the exact dates, we will announce them as widely as possible along with details of when and how much of the parking lot will be usable. The work is expected to take 2 weeks or less with good weather. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience, but we ask for everyone to bear with us while we do this important renewal project.

  • Defending the Quebec Challenge Cup vs Windsor (Nov 5th)

For the first time since 1957, the Quebec Challenge Cup trophy resides at the Ottawa Curling Club!

Join us on Saturday, November 5th from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM, to cheer on our OCC teams lead by James Benson and Geoff Colley as we defend the Cup vs Challenger: Windsor (Quebec).

The Quebec Challenge involves having a 10-end double rink curling game. At the conclusion of each challenge, the Cup is awarded to the club with the highest aggregate score.

The Quebec Challenge Cup is the oldest competitive trophy in North America, and has been continually contested since 1874.

  • Practice Ice

The Practice ice is now available online.
    NOTE:
Owing to the demand for practice ice, bookings are for 30 minutes (a half-hour) only.

  • Match Committee interim ruling on brooms

The Match Committee considered the question of brooms at their meeting last Wednesday (Sept 28). Their interim ruling can be found on the rules page. The short version is that most members can keep using their current equipment, but we ask you to do so in the spirit of fair play.

  • OTTAWA CURLING CLUB WINS QUEBEC CHALLENGE CUP! (Oldest competitive trophy in North America!)

Our OCC double rink skipped by Spencer Cooper and Eddie Chow challenged the Quebec Challenge Cup holders, Cornwall Curling Centre, and emerged victorious!

Huge congrats to SPENCER COOPER, DOUG JOHNSTON, BRIAN VANCE, JOHN SHERAR and EDDIE CHOW, FRED BARBIERI, JEFF POUW, DAN BOULET!

The Quebec Challenge Cup is the oldest competitive trophy in North America. It has been continually contested since 1874. The series is open to any club involved with the OVCA or Curling Quebec as an event under the Canadian Branch. Due to the vast number of clubs waiting to challenge for the Cup, it is typically a 5-7 year cycle to get another chance to challenge for this large, prestigious trophy.
